Hidden Gems of the East Neuk: A Local's Guide to Fife's Coastal Villages

The East Neuk of Fife is one of Scotland's best-kept secrets — a string of picturesque fishing villages stretching along the southern coast of the Fife peninsula from St Andrews down towards the Firth of Forth. Each village has its own distinct character, history, and reasons to visit. Best of all, the entire stretch is within 20 minutes by taxi from St Andrews, making it perfect for a half-day or full-day excursion.

Crail — The Jewel of the East Neuk

Distance from St Andrews: 10 miles (15 minutes by taxi)

Crail is often considered the most photogenic village on the Fife coast. Its tiny harbour, with colourful fishing boats bobbing against a backdrop of honey-stone cottages and pantile roofs, has graced countless postcards and Instagram feeds. The village has a long and distinguished history — its market charter dates back to 1310, making it one of the oldest in Scotland.

Must-do in Crail:

  • Walk down to the harbour and buy freshly cooked crab from the harbour-side shack (summer weekends only — and worth planning your trip around)
  • Explore the Crail Museum and Heritage Centre for a fascinating look at the village's fishing and trading history
  • Browse the Crail Pottery for handmade ceramics that make excellent gifts
  • Walk the Fife Coastal Path section from Crail towards Anstruther — about 3 miles of stunning clifftop scenery
  • Play a round at Crail Golfing Society, one of the oldest golf clubs in the world

Anstruther — Fish and Chips Capital

Distance from St Andrews: 9 miles (14 minutes by taxi)

Anstruther — or "Ainster" as locals call it — is the largest of the East Neuk villages and is famous for one thing above all else: fish and chips. The Anstruther Fish Bar has been voted the best chip shop in Britain multiple times, and the queues stretching down the harbour wall on a sunny day are legendary. Order your haddock supper and eat it sitting on the sea wall watching the boats.

Beyond the chip shop, Anstruther has much more to offer:

  • The Scottish Fisheries Museum — a comprehensive and surprisingly compelling museum charting Scotland's relationship with the sea
  • Boat trips to the Isle of May — a nature reserve home to puffins, seals, and thousands of nesting seabirds (seasonal, May to September)
  • The Dreel Tavern — one of the oldest pubs in Scotland, dating from the 16th century
  • Excellent independent shops and galleries along the high street and Shore Street

Pittenweem — The Artists' Village

Distance from St Andrews: 10 miles (16 minutes by taxi)

Pittenweem is the working heart of the East Neuk fishing fleet — you can still watch the fishing boats unload their catch at the harbour in the early morning. But the village has also become a hub for the arts, hosting the famous Pittenweem Arts Festival every August, when artists open their studios and homes as galleries, transforming the entire village into an open-air exhibition.

Highlights of Pittenweem:

  • St Fillan's Cave — a remarkable cave shrine believed to have been used by a 7th-century missionary, tucked away behind the high street
  • The Great House and Kellie Lodging — fine examples of the 16th and 17th century merchants' houses that line the village streets
  • Fresh seafood directly from the harbour — lobster, langoustines, and crab, often sold by the fishermen themselves from harbourside stalls

St Monans — Wind, Waves and a Church on the Shore

Distance from St Andrews: 12 miles (18 minutes by taxi)

St Monans feels wilder and more exposed than its neighbouring villages, sitting right at the edge of the Firth of Forth. The 14th-century Auld Kirk (St Monans Parish Church) stands dramatically close to the water's edge — sea spray reaches the church walls during winter storms. It is one of the most atmospheric churches in Scotland.

The former salt pans and windmill on the western edge of the village have been restored and are a fascinating walk. The St Monans to Elie section of the Fife Coastal Path is one of the best walks in the area, taking about an hour along windswept cliffs with views across to Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Elie and Earlsferry — The Beach Village

Distance from St Andrews: 13 miles (20 minutes by taxi)

Elie has the best sandy beach in the East Neuk — a wide, golden crescent of sand that is perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and beach cricket. On warm summer days it rivals any beach in the Mediterranean for beauty, if not for water temperature. The village also has an excellent golf course and a lively selection of cafés and restaurants.

What to do in Elie:

  • Swim, kayak, or paddleboard from the main beach — wetsuits recommended even in summer
  • Walk through the chain walk at the foot of the cliffs on the east side of the bay — a dramatic cliff path using chains bolted into the rock
  • Play a round at the Golf House Club — the course with the periscope first tee
  • Enjoy fish and seafood at The Ship Inn, which has a beer garden overlooking the beach and hosts beach cricket matches in summer

Planning Your East Neuk Day Trip

The ideal way to explore the East Neuk is to have your taxi driver drop you at one village and collect you from another, walking the coastal path between them. Popular combinations include:

  • Crail to Anstruther — 3 miles, about 1 hour walking, mostly flat with gorgeous views
  • Anstruther to St Monans via Pittenweem — 3 miles, about 1 hour, passing through two villages
  • St Monans to Elie — 2 miles, about 45 minutes, along dramatic cliff paths

Alternatively, we can drive you to all the villages in a single afternoon, stopping at each one for as long as you like. A half-day guided-style taxi tour of the East Neuk typically takes 3–4 hours and is a wonderful way to see the whole coast without the planning headaches.
